GRADUATE

All living things depend on the sustainability of the earth’s resources, and learning how to protect and better manage those limited resources is crucial to our survival. That’s your work as a master’s or doctoral student in UBC’s Faculty of Land and Food Systems. In your time here, you’ll deepen your understanding of critical environmental issues like water pollution, food shortages and rising temperatures, and what these mean to our ability to meet our basic human needs. You’ll connect the dots on global issues like climate change, storm water management, and the relationship between food, nutrition, diet and health. In the field, in the lab, in collaboration and in the classroom, you’ll work with other thinkers to develop solutions to address the problems that our global population is facing.

Research-Based Programs

Pursue your strongest interests through one of the graduate programs offered by UBC’s Faculty of Land and Food Systems. Work shoulder-to-shoulder with some of the world’s eminent researchers in a variety of disciplines as you begin building your life’s work. Contribute to the growing global body of knowledge around the interactions between humans, our food, our food systems — and the land that supports it all.

Expand your learning around animal physiology, behaviour, welfare, and management of livestock, aquaculture, and wildlife. You’ll explore courses in basic and applied sciences, collaborate with colleagues in industry as well as other graduate programs at UBC, and conduct original research leading to a thesis or dissertation. You’ll get started with publishing your work in peer-reviewed journals, too.

Nationally and internationally recognized for its excellence in policy-shaping research and innovation, UBC’s Food Science program offers opportunities for advanced study and research at the master’s and doctoral level. Get to work pushing positive developments in the food supply, moving science forward, and shaping regulation. Collaborate with experts across disciplines and borders, and drive the expansion of food science knowledge on a global scale.

Go deeper in basic and applied human nutrition. Dig into advanced coursework and thesis research through laboratory and field work in nutrient metabolism, diet and disease, nutrition through the life cycle and nutrition behaviours. Examine environmental, social and individual determinants of food choices and eating patterns.

Draw knowledge and inspiration from big thinkers in other disciplines as you advance the field of global food security in these multidisciplinary MSc and PhD programs. From production, processing and disposal to sustainable solutions informed by economic, social and environmental processes, you will develop a complex and evolving understanding of Earth’s land and food systems.

Push the boundaries. Collaborate. Take an interdisciplinary approach to designing programs that address some of the most fundamental biological problems the world is facing. Align your research and study trajectory to match your professional goals, and broaden the global scope of plant knowledge in the process. And do it all in one of the most biologically diverse, well-equipped academic venues on the planet.

Dig in and get your hands dirty with advanced studies in soil science. Join forces with the Faculty of Forestry in this unique cross-disciplinary degree program, and add basic and applied science courses in soil physics and microbial ecology, organic matter, irrigation and drainage, biometeorology, soil pollution, conservation and management, and land use as it applies to forest, agricultural, urban, and range soils. Where better but at the edge of the coastal temperate rainforest?

Course-based Programs

Get closer to the source of the problems — and make a stronger impact in shaping the solutions. And bring your insight and expertise to bear on the world’s most urgent issues around food safety, food security, resource use and shared environmental assets.

Focus your career on the aquaculture industry, the fastest growing food-producing sector world-wide. UBC’s Graduate Certificate in Aquaculture will prepare you with the necessary skills and knowledge to meet the challenges of this industry with the latest advances to enhance sustainable development.

In the Master of Land and Water Systems program, you’ll gain the science, training and knowledge to address emerging issues around food security, adapting to climate change, restoring degraded lands, conserving resources and more.

Explore current issues in the food sector in UBC’s Master of Food Science program. Throughout your degree, you will have the opportunity to help the local, national and international food sectors solve problems and make advances in food safety, risk assessment, product development and more.

Today’s world demands professionals capable of solving real problems in the food and resource sectors. UBC’s Master of Food and Resource Economics (MFRE) degree enhances your career by equipping you to tackle these global issues, and to create positive change for the future.
