Message from the Dean for LFS Community Connects: September 2022

Dean Rickey Yada

The start of this new academic year signals some exciting news for our Faculty and UBC.

The Animal Welfare Program (AWP) has kicked off events to mark its 25th anniversary. This world-renowned research program has a strong outreach focus, providing applied research to benefit industry, policy-makers, and non-profit organizations. Each month until next spring, you can tune into webinars to hear from our alumni working in all areas of animal welfare, and join signature in-person events. Find events listed on the AWP website.

Also, the Dietetics team in LFS has spent two years developing a new Master of Nutrition and Dietetics graduate professional program. We welcomed our first class of students, who travelled from across Canada and internationally, to campus this month.

Students who complete this 28-month program are eligible to register with a provincial dietetic regulatory body and write the national exam to become a Dietitian (or Registered Dietitian). I am especially proud that the program will not only include advanced clinical nutritional courses and counselling preparation, but also Indigenous Peoples’ health and social justice issues.

And lastly, UBC just launched an ambitious campaign to raise $3 billion and double alumni engagement. The FORWARD campaign is a bold commitment to help solve some of the world’s most urgent problems. UBC will raise funds to support student affordability, teaching, learning and research focused on the three key areas: advancing healthy lives; creating solutions for the planet; and, shaping thriving societies. Help be a catalyst through giving, volunteering, and engaging with us to amplify UBC’s impact. Visit the campaign website.

I hope we have an opportunity to cross paths at upcoming events that support the FORWARD campaign and the Animal Welfare Program – I always welcome meeting our alumni.

Sincerely,
Rickey Yada
