Flavour of the Month: Coconut Smoothie

We asked Della Hamzah, our LFS Dean’s Office Communications Assistant what her favourite back to school food and drink was:
“This coconut smoothie is wonderfully refreshing and delicious! It strikes a perfect balance with just the right combination of ingredients, and it’s not overly sweet. I also love Vietnamese food, a classic comfort food of mine.”

Caring, dependable and diligent.
What is your favourite back-to-school food and drink?
This coconut smoothie is wonderfully refreshing and delicious! It strikes a perfect balance with just the right combination of ingredients, and it’s not overly sweet. I also love Vietnamese food, a classic comfort food of mine.
Why did you choose the Faculty of Land and Food Systems and how did you become interested in Applied Biology?
Following my high school graduation, I was very nervous regarding the transition to university life. The idea of attending a large institution left me concerned about fitting in and finding my place. However, I am so glad to choose the Faculty of Land and Food Systems, as it turned out to be an such a friendly and inclusive community.
During my childhood, I have always had an unconditional love for animals. Upon discovering this faculty, I realized that the Applied Biology program was a perfect fit for me. Within this program, I have the privilege of surrounding myself with classmates and instructors who share the same love for animals. I have met great people within my program that share the same passion as me and it has been such a meaningful experience to learn and work with them.

What activities, programs, and extracurricular activities have you been involved in at UBC?
Throughout 3 years of my undergraduate degree, I was part of Land and Food Systems Undergraduate Society (LFS|US), a student body that aimed to work together to build a sense of community within the faculty. I was part of the Communications portfolio and was fortunate enough to be the Vice President of Communications for my last year in LFS|US. As of member of LFS|US, I was able to discover my love for marketing as well as learn and improve on different interpersonal and leadership skills. Not only did I learn a lot of new skills, but I have also met and worked with such great people that I could now consider good friends of mine.
I have also been an Orientation Leader for UBC’s Imagine Day, where I got to guide a group of new LFS students on their first day on campus. As an orientation leader, I felt that I wanted to create a safe space for the new students as I experienced with my leaders when I first started at UBC. This experience has been very rewarding as I was able to expand on my leadership skills and meet new people during my training and Imagine Day.
How long have you worked in LFS and what is your role? Any insights or knowledge that you have gained from your current work-learn experience within the LFS Faculty so far?
I am currently working with the Faculty of Land and Food Systems as a Communications Assistant. My role consists of assisting the Communications team in creating marketing content for the LFS social media platforms, the faculty website, etc. During the past 5 months, I have gained many great experiences and learned a lot of new skills, especially in the marketing field. This job has been different than the previous job experiences I have had, which although intimidating, has allowed me to experience many things outside of my comfort zone and acquire valuable new skills.
This work-learn position has brought me closer to the faculty through learning more about what LFS has to offer. Not to mention that I have met such great people within my workplace. It has felt very rewarding and I’m very connected to my LFS community and my education. I look forward to continuing this position for the rest of my school year.
Before graduating, what is still on your UBC bucket list?
Although it is my last year at UBC as an undergraduate student, I have yet to experience all the different and beautiful places that I could visit on campus. My UBC bucket list is to discover more hidden study spots as well as the different and wonderful architecture that many of the building on campus have.
